Land grabs are of course, not new. Australia (my land) is built, from 1788, on that concept, and suffers to this day from foreign pillaging of our soils and the minerals etc beneath it.
Africa, indeed all lands, continents and islands, long seen as rightful and ripe to claim as 'colonies' of Brit-Eurape have been 'grabbed' for eons.
The difference in this era is that the planet has been 'mapped' by rapacious, expansionist, insatiable and fecund powers of the 1st world, and there's no more 'uncolonised' territory for the most consumptive on Earth to plunder.
Also, peak-population is with us, and so food and other resources are at premiums never before so high.
Obviously, we're all 'for it', unless governments step-in and stop the ruthless 100%-scenario foreign ownership.
All African governments have a responsibility to act this way immediately.
But clearly, the phenomenon comes because there is a need for arable land. So bodies like the African Union, have to act in partisan with interested nations like China, to ensure the Locals are not made landless. International co-operation is far better than competition in these crucial issues.
This is best done by all parties scrapping current single-family and corporate farming models, and begin using science and Wisdom to create village-farms which do not evict current land-owners, farmers, users, but concentrates their housing, needs and labor collectively - economies-of-scale - with a Human heart.
Boiled-down, it's all about 'sustainability' from here forward.
A brief example of this concept is in one article on my blog:

I recommend to any interested in world affairs, to follow Al Jazeera's webpages. They leave the Australian and western mainstream news services far behind.

But as well, while there's always chunky, and oft' biased COMMENT after articles, most of the comments from readers are excellent, albeit with typo's etc., and give broader information and depth to current global issues, like Libya, Africa and the Middle East, than the articles can go into.

I'm always humbled by what other readers write on sites like Al Jazeera, and wish increasingly I was NOT in Astrayliar.
